Based on these four factors, the IMF’s AIPI (Exhibit 24) ranks G7 countries on top, with a score of 0.72 for the
group, where the United States scores 0.77 and the Eurozone sits at 0.67. In comparison, emerging market
economies sit at 0.46, where values vary widely from China’s 0.64 or Chile’s 0.59 to India’s and Brazil’s ~0.5.
Different starting points in the early stages of the AI wave, as proxied by the IMF’s AIPI, are therefore teeing up a
widening economic divide, as some countries lack the foundations needed to potentialize the benefits of this
growing technology. Sub-Saharan Africa’s AIPI of 0.34 is less than half of the United States’ and Canada’s.
