A Return to First Principles
When Isaac Newton reflected on gravity, he recalled an apple falling from a tree. The story
endured not because it explained the science, but because it marked a shift in perspective.
The apple was ordinary. The insight was not.
Gravity did not suddenly appear. What changed was the ability to connect what was familiar on
the ground with what governed motion far beyond it. In construction, a plumb line serves a similar
purpose. It does not predict outcomes but reveals what is vertical and true by yielding to gravity
itself.
Markets force the same reckoning. For years, capital seemed weightless: liquidity abundant,
financial conditions forgiving, risk premia treated as optional. Growth was rewarded for promise,
valuation deferred to narrative. The plumb line was there but rarely consulted.
Gravity is constant; velocity changes. Adjustments that once felt theoretical are becoming
tangible as the cost of capital reasserts itself and assumptions meet reality. Growth is uneven,
inflation moderated but persistent, and monetary policy a real constraint. Fiscal choices carry
clearer consequences.
Geopolitics now shapes trade, energy, technology, and capital flows, making risk premia more
variable across regions and sectors. The atmosphere is murkier, even as underlying forces remain
unchanged.
Opportunity has not disappeared. Headline valuations obscure variation beneath the surface.
Gravity acts on everything, but outcomes differ by structure and balance. Markets are no
different. Beneath broad indices, opportunities persist, though less evenly distributed.
In this environment, diversification and security selection are not refinements; they are essential.
Concentration and leverage accelerate adjustment; resilience and discipline slow it.
This is not a call for defensiveness, nor a forecast of stress. It is a reminder that when narratives
multiply and signals blur, the most valuable reference point is often the simplest one. A plumb
line does not predict the future but rather it clarifies alignment.
Gravity does not eliminate opportunity.
It reveals what is true and what deserves to remain in focus.
